Blanket Day Feb 19th,2011

We had another very successful Blanket Day with 85 University students participating from Radford University and Virginia Tech. We also had 70 adults. We now have 575 new blankets to give to children in need in the New River Valley.Our lunch provided by our volunteers was served by Meg Wyttenbach. APO members from RU helped with set up and clean up. We will do it again in June so come join us, June 11, 2011 @ Grove Methodist Church on Tyler Ave in Radford, Va. A big THANK-YOU to Laura Eanes, Regina Howard, Bev Rader, Lynn Wright and Sherry Oxley for all their extra help. I couldn't have done it without you.

Blanket Day June 2010

We had a wonderful,fun Blanket Day. We had 45 people participate, enjoyed a great lunch, and collected 250 new blankets. We were able to tag and label all blankets and they are ready for delivery. The youth group from Grace Episcopal Church helped with all the set-up and clean -up. Our next Blanket Day is set for Oct. 2,2010 at Grove Methodist Church in Radford. Blanket Day in June

Our next NRV Project Linus Blanket Day is scheduled for June 19th at Grove Methodist Church on Tyler Ave in Radford. The Blanket Day will be from 9am-3pm. We will collect blankets, label blankets and make new blankets. We also need help making name tags for blankets. We are planning a nice lunch for everyone. Blanket Day Feb. 2010

We had a wonderful Blanket Day with 167 people participating, 87 were RU and VT students. The students made 150 fleece blankets, made blanket tags and helped to set-up and clean-up. I am continually impressed with there dedication and hard work. Lots of regular Blanketeers attended and we had over 20 new attendees. I ended up with 500 new blankets. Thank you all so much. NRV Project Linus is very successful thanks to all of you. We are now on Facebook(NRVprojectlinus) so check us out. Next Project Linus Blanket Day is scheduled for June 19th at Grove Methodist Church.

Blanket Day Rescheduled

I have rescheduled the next Blanket Day due to the weather. It will be Feb 20th, 2010 at Grove Methodist Church on Tyler Ave. Hope to see everyone there. We are planning to have chili for lunch. If you bring finished blankets please put your name on each one.

Blankets for Kids in Haiti

Happy New Year to all!! Project Linus National has requested all chapters to collect blankets for children in Haiti. The first request was for 10,000 blankets to be sent to Heart to Heart Organization in Kansas which will then send them to Haiti. NRV Project Linus has agreed to send 50 blankets by Feb. 20th. Blankets can be taken to Joann Fabrics, to Blanket Day @ Grove Methodist Church on Feb. 6th, or brought to my home, 202 Arnold Ave in Radford. I have 30 blankets promised as of Feb. 1st.

Happy Holidays to all my friends and Blanket makers. We have had a great year and look forward to a better one next year with everyones help. Don't forget our next scheduled Blanket Making Day is Feb. 6th,2010 at Grove Methodist Church on Tyler Ave in Radford from 9am-3pm. I will post on the website the total blankets made and donated for 2009 at the end of this year.

October Update

Here is a long overdue update! October has really been a busy month. Oct. 3 was our scheduled University Student Blanket Day. 55 Radford University students and 13 Va. Tech students participated. They made 131 blankets and enjoyed cookies and drinks provided by our adult volunteers. On Oct.17th 24 members of RU Male and Female Track Team met at the Dedmon Center and made over 40 blankets in 2 hours. On Sat. Oct. 24 we held our annual fall Blanket Day at Grove Methodist Church. It was very successful with 84 RU students and 76 adults participating. We ended up with over 400blankets probably closer to 500!!! We had a wonderful lunch (Taco Soup)made by Meg Wyttenbach. A big TY to Bev, Laura, Regina, Meg and Ari for help with set-up, clean-up and kitchen duty. I must tell you how impressed I am with the wonderful support and help from our local University students. Students from APO came to my house on Friday, loaded everything into my car and then unloaded it at the church as well as setting up all the tables and chairs. Then on Sat afternoon the LaCrosse team members helped to clean up and get everything(including blankets) back to my house.

Christmas Bazaar and Vendor Sale @ Grove Methodist

We will again participate in the Bazaar and Vendor Sale at Grove Methodist Church scheduled for November 14th from 9am-3pm. This has proven to be a big fundraiser for NRV Project Linus and I am requesting your help again. We will need handmade crafts. Items can be brought to Blanket Day Oct. 24th or call/email Penny and/or Laura Eanes and arrangements can be made to pick them up. Sad News

Elizabeth Sandidge a dear friend and wonderful Project Linus supporter passed away July 18th. She was one of the first people who made blankets for me and attended our first Blanket Day in June 2001. It was mentioned at her Memorial Service today that she really loved to make blankets for our little children. RIP Elizabeth!

Komfort Kids- Official Project Linus Fabric

I am happy to announce that Komfort Kids the official Project Linus fabric is available locally at Sew-Biz in Radford. It is manufactured by Avlyn and the pattern was designed by Patrick Lose. Avlyn has agreed to donate 8% of the sale of this fabric to Project Linus. The fabric is very nice. There is a bright colored panel and 6 coordinating colors available at Sew-Biz. Be sure to stop in to see this fabric. A picture is available on the National website ( Projectlinus.org) I have purchased enough material for 4 quilts and will give them to the first 4 people who contact me and are willing to make them by our next Blanket Day, Oct 24th.

Blankets for Mission of Mercy Project

My friend Sheree Madison who works for Dr. Balmer , a dentist in Dublin told me about the Va. Dental Asooc. Mission of Mercy Project in Wise Co. Va. They provide free dental care to families and she is helping July 24th-26th. She told me that many families stand in line all nite with their small children. She told me last year when she saw them waiting in the cold it broke her heart and the workers took off their coats and sweaters and gave them to the little children. I gave her 23 of our blankets to give out to the children next week. She was so thrilled and will try to send us some pictures.

Sheets for Autism Blankets

I now have PLENTY of sheets for our Autism Blankets thanks to Carilion Laundry, but guess what, they all need to be folded and they are in LARGE bags in the back of my van. How about a sheet folding party in front of my house? OR, I can come to you. I will do a few each day weather permitting.

Skip-Stitch Blades

I have skip-stitch blades for sale. These blades will attach to your rotary cutter and can be used to make holes in the edge of your fabric (fleece, flannel) and then crochet around blanket the blades are $10 each.

Autism Blankets

At our annual project linus institute I had the opportunity to hear from an autism counselor, an autistic young adult and an expert in the construction of weighted blankets for autistic children.

We learned that the blankets need to be weighted, because these children are more comforted by the heaviness of a blanket

I have made several contacts locally and plan to attend a support group meeting, August 11, of parents who have autistic children

I have a pattern to make these blankets. Supplies include 2-1 yard pieces of coordinating fabric (one solid, one print).
2 2/3 yard velcro and 12 twin bed sheets for each blanket (sheets are used to stuff the blanket)

The weight of the blanket will depend on the child’s weight. The blanket should be 10% of the child’s weight.

I have purchased 400 yard velcro and will be getting sheets from Carillion Clinic laundry in Roanoke. (The sheets are being donated)

Let me know if you are interested in helping with this worthy cause. I will supply pattern, velcro, and sheets.

It was suggested that we use material with cars, trains, or fire engine theme (anything with wheels is a big hit with these kids). Also not too busy a print and the coordinating solid should not be a real bright color.
